Theexpression most commonly used todescribe the type of program is“relationship banking.” A gooddefinition is provided in the 1985 bookMarketing Financial Services:
In relationship banking the emphasisis on establishing a long-term,multiple-service relationship; onsatisfying the totality of the client’sfinancial need; on minimizing the needor desire of clients to splinter theirfinancial business among variousinstitutions.
Implicit within any definition ofrelationship banking is recognition thatthe financial-service requirements ofone individual or relationship group. Security and Commodity Exchanges
Security and commodity exchanges aretrading posts where people meet who wishto buy or sell. The exchanged themselvesdo no trading; they merely provide aplace prospective buyers and selling canmeet and conduct their business.
Wall Street, although the bestknown, is not only the home of theexchanges in the United States. Thereare the cotton exchanges in New orleansand Chicago; and grain exchanges in manyof the large cities of the Midwest. Someexchanges, like the Chicago Board ofTrade, provide market services forseveral kinds of products. These tradingposts where products may be bought orsole are called commodity exchanges.
The security exchanges, on the otherhand, are meeting places where stocksand bonds are traded. Like the commodityexchanges, they help serve the economiclife of the country. But when theiroperations get out of hand, they maybecome very dangerous. In 1929, thesecurity exchanges, or stock market, contributed to a crash-a sudden, sharpdecline in the value of securities. Manypeople lost fortunes; many corporationswere bankrupted; many workers lost theirjobs. The Crash of 1929 has beenattributed to many causes, among themwild and unwise speculation by manypeople and dishonest practices on thepart of some businessmen and of somemembers of the exchanges.
Today, however, investing throughsecurity exchanges and trading oncommodity exchanges has been made saferby regulations set up by the exchangesthemselves and by regulations of theUnited States government in 1992, thegovernment instituted the CommodityExchange Commission which operatesthrough the Department of Agriculture;and in 1934, the Securities and ExchangeCommission, to protect investors and thepublic against dishonest practice in theexchanges.
