  Learn English in an English-speaking Country6 B6 k9 n' h7 H6 O/ P3 C( L
As economic globalization accelerates, language plays a vital role in cross-boundary communication. An international language like English is inevitably popular among language learners all over the world. And there is a widespread concern whether or not to go abroad for one's English study. To me the answer is undoubtedly a yes, since it provides a chance not only to learn the language, but also to understand the culture.
& _$ S9 H" _3 c First of all, going to an English-speaking country is a better way to create an ideal language-learning environment. As it is said, when in Rome, do as Romans do. Thus it can be inferred that a better way to learn how Romans behave is to go to Rome and observe their way of life. It is also true with English study. In an English-speaking country, one is likely to be exposed to more chances to communicate with native speakers rather than being confined to book knowledge only. On his stay in London, a student will have a taste of royal English himself, thus it is easier for him to improve his pronunciation and intonation through imitation. Surrounded by native speakers, a language learner will also find it very helpful in improving other skills like speaking, reading and writing.
5 d5 @& C7 i  p6 S1 U9 q Moreover, a student going abroad not only enhances their language proficiency but also comes into direct interplay with a new culture, which is an integral part of language study. Some linguists maintain that one cannot fully grasp a language unless he knows about the culture profoundly, for language is only a medium to conduct communication. Thus living with English-speaking people, one can obtain a vivid first-hand understanding of some idioms, slang and the cultural background And this personal experience will be very difficult to achieve-whatever abundant study resources can be accessed to domestically. By chatting with native speakers in daily life, students can gain an insight in the culture.
1 X) ?# ?7 y% U, b Judging from all the analysis above, we may safely come to such a conclusion that going to an English-speaking country is advantageous for English learners. A study experience abroad is such a practice to double the achievements with half the efforts. Fully utilizing the chance to get a deeper involvement in the exotic culture, students may become real masters of English.

4 e* S: z4 m2 i; \: \ Where and when we study are important factors for the success of learning. But experienced teachers or a desirable language environment will do us no good unless we take the initiative to study. Recently the number of students going abroad for further study has undergone a phenomenal growth, which has evoked various opinions. And personally, I do not appreciate such a choice because a good command of English is also accessible at home. 3 x# ^- o, W% h4 J7 t0 M/ l
First it is man's own initiative and the subsequent efforts that make the difference in the result of learning. That accounts for a handful of admirable stories of students from poor families who became successes later. In sharp contrast, those who are slack with studies will find it all the same even if their parents send them to top universities in the world. It is the learners' inner drive that predetermines their final success. 9 l0 t: S! d3 o, H6 z" s
Second, students nowadays can get access to every resource needed in the home country to improve English. With fundamental changes in multimedia and Internet, a student can enjoy TV programs or broadcast in English chat with native speakers on line, get a copy of the latest issue of foreign magazines or newspapers, etc. Students with a firm determination will find a variety of study resources to their avail at home, which also eliminates the negative consequences' such as cultural shock to the minimum. 1 ?: p4 w& V3 B( [/ c/ Y* M
Third, to study English abroad entails a considerable amount of investment from the family. According to statistics, more than 60 percent of Chinese students abroad are financially backed up by their parents. The tuition and living expenses amount to about 200, 000 RMB per year on the average, which is beyond the means of the students and puts their parents under severe burden and youngsters' independence into shade. Therefore financially it is a sensible choice neither on the part of parents nor on the part of students. 6 T6 _* r. p! q7 G
Although going abroad to study seems to have gained ground among youngsters, students are advised not to go with the stream blindly. Taking all the factors into account, both parents and children should regard this option in a new light. If it is highly likely to attain a good level of English at home, why do we take the trouble of going all the way to a foreign land to achieve it?
