Senior Chinese leader says SOEs must lead innovation

NANJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Large state-owned enterprises (SOEs) should play a greater role in promoting innovation, senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang during a visit to the eastern Jiangsu Province.
Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said during a tour of XCMG Group, a state-owned heavy machinery firm, based in Xuzhou City, that large SOEs shouldered major tasks in promoting innovation.
He said XCMG should develop more core technologies and continue leading the sector.
At an institute dedicated to mine safety management research, Zhou said efforts should be made to improve technologies and promote their application so as to ensure mine safety.
Visiting residential communities, a science park, and public security bureaus, he said migrant workers' rights and interests should be protected according to law, "especially at the end of the year."
The central government has been endeavoring to ensure migrant workers are paid promptly ahead of the Spring Festival, when hundreds of millions of migrants return home with money saved.
He said Jiangsu had accumulated experience in transforming its economic growth pattern and narrowing the development gap within the region.
During his four-day visit, Zhou paid his respects at the memorial to late premier Zhou Enlai in Huai'an city. He said Party officials should continue Zhou's spirit and "serve the people well."
