NANJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Large state-owned enterprises (SOEs) should play a greater role in promoting innovation, senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang during a visit to the eastern Jiangsu Province.
% h$ g! y5 Q; B3 f3 _4 v/ q Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said during a tour of XCMG Group, a state-owned heavy machinery firm, based in Xuzhou City, that large SOEs shouldered major tasks in promoting innovation.* ^ Q- B' @% Y1 j6 i% n
He said XCMG should develop more core technologies and continue leading the sector.

Visiting residential communities, a science park, and public security bureaus, he said migrant workers' rights and interests should be protected according to law, "especially at the end of the year."0 p9 i, W' `8 N. F$ ]" i
The central government has been endeavoring to ensure migrant workers are paid promptly ahead of the Spring Festival, when hundreds of millions of migrants return home with money saved.1 _: d: w' \4 O9 ] t/ O

During his four-day visit, Zhou paid his respects at the memorial to late premier Zhou Enlai in Huai'an city. He said Party officials should continue Zhou's spirit and "serve the people well." |
