31.         Financial gain is certainly one factor to consider when selecting a career. But

5 \" v8 x* [0 {3 I4 hmoney plays in career choice should depend on the priorities, goals and values of the
4 ?; V6 A" h- F/ G* `0 b5 V- cparticular person making the choice.1 \8 n) [8 O$ y+ {( x
      The main problem with selecting a career primarily on the basis of money is that ) V, c7 Y$ W5 C) g- j9 N! d
for many people to do so would be to ignore one's personal values, needs, and larger 5 K- Y* Q/ h( z1 @
life goals. Indeed, many people appreciate this notion when they choose their career. For
4 O1 @% I+ }( N" w! Y7 |+ n( {example, some people join one of the helping professions, such as nursing, teaching or
1 O- B* w- o. C* n4 f7 s  o+ csocial work, well aware that their career will not be financially lucrative, Their choice 3 i0 i3 i2 p' ]1 K% n
properly stems from an overriding altruistic desire, not from an interest in financial gain. 0 G2 Z3 |, ?( n" S6 H
Others choose to pursue intellectual or creative fulfillment—as writers, artists, or ; R7 G1 p% r3 H
musicians—knowing that they are trading off dollars for non-tangible rewards. Still
, `9 z7 j+ A/ z9 c6 t5 {; V  @others forego economic gain to work as full-time parents; for these people, family and ! y* q0 U, n* H! c9 }; ^; v. a8 Q
children are of paramount importance in life. Finally, many people subordinate
. L' ^0 f8 ^0 `3 Y" q: _' d) O: @economic prospects to their desire to live in a particular location; these people may   H  h' n) U0 M: N# ~5 v
place a high value on recreation, their physical health, or being near a circle of friends.0 a* b/ ^  s0 G+ S% x! |
      Another problem with focusing primarily on money when selecting a career is that
. A: Q/ t  A+ F& eit ignores the notion that making money is not an end in end of itself, but rather a means
$ I3 k$ S; y4 J- A3 |9 w2 bof obtaining material goods and services and of attaining important goals—such as   |, N/ d7 ~" }, R
providing security for oneself and one's family, lifelong learning, or freedom to travel : m' |: C  M! N! S( m5 R
or to pursue hobbies. Acknowledging the distinction, one may nevertheless select a ; w. b2 X$ x) C) ~6 _
career on the basis of money—since more money can buy more goods and services as
7 j2 ~) Q% A# Swell as the security, freedom, and time to enjoy them. Even so, one must strike a ! r! M* n- V( ^+ D0 e  B
balance, for if these things that money is supposed to provide are sacrificed in the ! P% u, v: p3 J5 J
pursuit of money itself, the point of having money—and of one's career selection—has
- j. f" G7 O& Xbeen lost.
. ]% g( `4 p  P# H3 K9 m: B8 y3 x      In conclusion, economic gain should not be the overriding factor in selecting a
7 v0 G( V) g" ]+ m7 G) e: L4 gcareer. While for a few people the single-minded pursuit of wealth may be fulfillment
' k% I: f: G: p# i0 u2 l. Venough, most people should, and indeed do, temper the pursuit of wealth against other " D: X0 E+ m) `
values, goals, and priorities. Moreover, they recognize that money is merrily a means to
- }/ q0 A% F# _. fmore important objectives, and that the pursuit itself may undermine the achievement of + p0 I: w) b+ I4 n+ W% p
these objectives.
