49.        There is no doubt that hard work contributes to success. Yet a person can work . _, p4 Z0 F3 l" F+ X) H+ F
awfully hard and still achieve very little. In order to bring about success, hard work has
9 Y9 i+ L" p4 q% jto be directed by dear goals and the knowledge of how to reach them. Moreover, " ^! T7 _! y5 Y9 h# I. q. Y
imagination, intelligence and persistence can be equally important to success.' U+ l9 S( s/ F
      Individual success is gauged by the extent to which one reaches his important
7 X: z- X; v' U- {8 W8 Y, ?! [personal goals. And it takes careful planning to set goals and discover the best means of
* C4 z% K% R# F  g& [9 H0 xrealizing them. Before hard work even begins, therefore, considerable time and effort 1 M$ l( Q) ?# V; E; b
should be spent on planning.# l6 y% s, ^. ^: ]. I
      Intelligence and imagination play important roles in planning. Imagination helps
- p; g5 B, P6 V' ]3 p0 V! Zone to envision new solutions to problems, and new means by which to achieve goals. 6 ^* x) ]  T% {4 `7 |, U' ]8 w
Intelligence helps one research and critically evaluate the possibilities that imagination   B6 Y/ j$ y: \5 r& i1 F, r
has provided. Together, imagination and intelligence can even help one avoid certain , S0 C2 P6 D! l' z; x% t( j
kinds of hard work, by producing more efficient ways to accomplish 'goals.
3 X1 e6 s/ i7 B6 n      Finally, persistence is crucial to success. Sometimes, rewards do not come
! Y3 c% l$ ~/ \quickly—even when one carefully sets the goals, creatively and intelligently plans ways
/ \; G- J( k# [+ o! h( R' |& Uto achieve them, and work hard according to plan. Tradition has it, for example, that
+ f  V7 Z0 x. o0 Z" ^( |Thomas Edison made thousands of attempts to create a light bulb before he finally " Z1 @7 W& k/ j, J8 R/ B$ v* b) Q, @
succeeded. In the face of countless failures, he refused to quit. In fact, he considered
( |0 T% N' `; v9 |each failure a successful discovery of what not to do!( `3 h! R6 s+ j6 J' n; A$ L6 d
      In conclusion, it is true that there is no substitute for hard work. But hard work is
5 \% R5 |# A2 M# Jan ingredient of success, and not the key. Hard work can produce real accomplishment
) ~5 z" x5 F- g; A1 q, r: k5 o2 Vonly if it is directed by a plan involving some idea of one's goals and the means to them.
( g( C0 I- R0 d2 AAnd a good plan, as well as its successful implementation, requires imagination,
* p% l- i- y& V  s0 Dintelligence, and persistence.
