operates. As it stands, however, the statement permits one to conclude that this   ~: C% U/ Y8 {; [) r
obligation should take precedence over the profit objective. By allowing for this ; r% M) F( u0 V
interpretation, the speaker fails to appreciate the problems associated with shouldering & _$ G) F" C/ S( W( k% S- A( O4 m
business with an affirmative duty to ensure the public's well being.
) I* k" d: `0 [9 ^1 Z      The primary reason why I agree business should have a duty to the public is that
8 @5 U2 R& l+ _) u0 ^0 Esociety would be worse off by exonerating business from social responsibility. Left
2 S6 E" m  B9 i! G3 G7 centirely to their own self-interest, businesses pollute the environment, withhold
9 P1 M4 f. D* _% Mimportant product information from consumers, pay employees substandard wages, and
& U! n4 n# m" Imisrepresent their financial condition to current and potential shareholders. Admittedly,
) w* O2 B5 D' y4 M0 ]  Bin its pursuit of profit business can benefit the society as well—by way of more and ; I, g" P' A2 Y: r* I! d
better-paying jobs, economic growth, and better yet lower-priced products. However,
% H+ N* k7 Z' i' ]this point ignores the harsh consequences—such as those listed earlier—of imposing no
, e% I6 x/ P7 p* {% u5 ]affirmative social duty on business.
/ Q. r! v& o3 ]% L9 ]2 y' }      Another reason why I agree business should have a duly to the public is that 1 x1 @+ }8 `, [, s" S1 v
business owes such a duty. A business enters into an implied contract with the
. t$ u& j/ }' M3 p* K! {; x/ _community in which it operates, under which the community agrees to permit a ; e0 K$ N  E, o, [* x7 O
corporation to co business while the business implicitly promises to benefit, and not , ?- E2 c( d" e; l  w; Y; m9 X/ i
harm, the community. This understanding gives rise to a number of social obligations on 0 G/ j8 u7 D! q% I; L7 G+ v: z
the part of the business—to promote consumer safety, to not harm the environmental, to
* ~) l, o7 K$ @6 w6 e+ ?treat employees and competitors fairly, and so on.
$ I3 `- n- o6 V( m9 b2 z      Although I agree that business should have a duty to serve the pubic, I disagree
- t3 A! ^2 }1 \0 }. b& Y! j- Hthat this should be the primarily objective of business. Imposing affirmative social $ J5 p2 v) H# v3 X2 p
duties on business opens a Pandora's box of problems—for example, how to determine. * l9 `8 _7 u8 J/ I+ Z. M; E
(1) what the public interest is in the first place, (2) which public interests are most % V, [" O8 @" s& Q' h, U
important, (3) what actions are in the public interest, and (4) how business' duty to the
5 M% c8 {- |  q( Kpublic might be monitored and enforced. Government regulation is the only practical $ m! M. K  w6 D% d$ T/ R
way to deal with these issues, yet government is notoriously inefficient and corrupt; the
+ w0 Z0 m" f$ h% yonly way to limit these problems is to limit the duty of business to serve the public / G, g2 h; F- e: i8 _6 a3 y& x
interest.5 `! n1 v* D; t% b# {! O
      In sum, I agree that the duty of business should extend beyond the simple profit : `" o& R7 K7 U* e9 w6 [5 s+ D
motive. However, its affirmative obligations to society should be tempered against the
+ i6 D) c3 {2 _  M/ \5 S; V2 jpubic benefits of the profit motive and against the practical problems associates
