downward trend in the costs of film processing over a 24-year period, the author argues
6 r  u: X6 ?0 M, Zthat Olympic Foods will likewise be able to minimize costs and thus maximize profits

organizations learn how to do things better, they become more efficient." This principle, ) N% Y1 q! _$ G( z' b# J1 [5 D. H/ D
coupled with the fact that Olympic Foods has had 25 years of experience in the food 7 M! R0 d' Y$ Z# y+ Q: |0 X
processing industry leads to the author's rosy prediction. This argument is unconvincing
3 B+ P& r% h1 P' abecause it suffers from two critical flaws.
+ F. J; G; A0 W/ }* O/ u      First, the author's forecast of minimal costs and maximum profits rests on the ( c% d: s; F5 [& w. K  Z
gratuitous assumption that Olympic Foods' "long experience" has taught it how to do : e& ~4 T; v! `# V  ~2 @
things better. There is, however, no guarantee that this is the case. Nor does the author
+ B" Y$ K  k& I+ Ucite any evidence to support this assumption. Just as likely, Olympic Foods has learned
. N& Q" j/ S6 K" g% Hnothing from its 25 years in the food-processing business. Lacking this assumption, the & F- ~4 @5 N1 S, r# U
expectation of increased efficiency is entirely unfounded.; E0 a# H/ z1 y, x2 S
Second, it is highly doubtful that the facts drawn from the color-film processing
, K( U) U+ _0 g9 q9 c. yindustry are applicable to the food processing industry. Differences between the two : r% C2 G1 g- l
industries clearly outweigh the similarities, thus making the analogy highly less than

Problems such as these might present insurmountable obstacles that prevent lowering

      As it stands the author's argument is not compelling. To strengthen the conclusion 1 g: b/ ?" c: ^& J! R. R3 F4 x
that Olympic Foods will enjoy minimal costs and maximum profits in the future, the
