29.        This speaker argues that farmers who invested in organic farming equipment ; m: W/ a  p7 i5 s
should resume synthetic farming because it is financially unwise to continue organic
6 v# N% H+ |( Q0 kfarming. The speaker cites studies showing that farmers who switched to organic / f& G! N0 j+ x0 d/ N; P0 Q0 v
farming last year had tower crop yields. Based on these studies, the speaker concludes
; t+ K" W2 R0 u/ ithat the relatively inexpensive investment in organic farming equipment cannot justify - ^# o" G! R! ^1 H1 _5 m, L
continuing to farm organically. The speaker also claims that continuing to farm

; N; D6 k$ h$ |  E, [! v. E" u      One problem with this reasoning involves the vague comparative claim that
7 S) i0 T; o' ^1 m" Y/ q6 Tfarmers who switched to organic farming fast year had lower crop yields. We are not 2 r. J/ F9 r  e( x
informed whether the survey compared last year's organic crop yields with yields from 9 I& ?  w! d. j7 Z; p; E
previous years or with those from synthetic farms. Moreover, the author provides no ! k" E2 E, s1 T5 O' f
evidence about how the survey was conducted. Lacking more information about the 8 ~9 U7 K8 F4 W: S: u% {9 x$ I1 S7 `
survey, we cannot accept the speaker's conclusion.
3 _2 P8 r9 A( R1 E0 j8 @      Secondly, the speaker assumes that the low crop yields for first-time organic , [3 z/ M5 N5 V: R3 [
farmers last year are representative of crop yields for organic farmers overall. However,
! ^$ \+ s0 ^; G4 cmore experienced organic farmers might have had much better crop yields last year.
- d: J) v- ]( T' w+ DAlso, the first-time organic farmers might improve their own crop yields in future years. 2 c; u. U9 g/ L- _& |5 n
Moreover, last year's yield may have been unusually low due to poor weather or other
/ D0 d/ F1 V: h: tfactors, and thus not indicative of future yields.
- w7 q$ U2 y5 p/ F' B      Finally, in asserting that organic farming is financially unwise because it is
( r/ U1 U- B( R" P. N0 Rmotivated by environmental instead of economic concerns, the speaker unfairly assumes 9 L/ A- r* P1 s2 @& k$ D/ S8 f
that a practice cannot be both environmentally and economically beneficial. It is
& I5 |. J1 |3 }6 Kpossible that, in the long run, practices that help protect the environment will also result / W6 ~8 H& H: x2 V
in greater economic benefits. For instance, organic farming methods may better protect
3 B; W5 w  Z3 Z* B; a7 a( Vsoil from depletion of the elements that contribute to healthy crops, providing an 4 o) U- x' }, ?
economic benefit in the long run.
! D3 N4 m" A7 u  `; ^+ |' s9 G      In conclusion, the speaker's argument is poorly supported and is short-sighted. To # K8 m( g" `  r4 F: L2 M
better evaluate the argument, we would need more information about the how the . J# y! P' H0 `" q' I5 |
survey was conducted, especially about the comparison the survey makes. To strengthen
7 z: D; Y4 A1 Q- X$ Fthe argument, the speaker must present evidence that last years' crop yields from first-

economically beneficial as well.
