  CAROL: Did Mr. Lin put you in charge of marketing?
1 l& d& V( A! [  JOHN: He's still not sure whether he wants to put me in charge,
& p+ K) g4 h( \2 G! u) j; b  or whether he wants to hire an American.- C" B2 s1 q8 d: Q% G
  But even if he hires an American, I'll probably be transferred to our American office.! {# T  U) a! T' U7 b, x2 o
  CAROL: Where will it be?* z1 j5 _( u1 g. K$ @% S
  JOHN: We aren't sure yet. Maybe L.A. I think L.A. would be the best idea.
9 G& f) p6 w  K" D  CAROL: Is it because of trade negotiations that we can start selling in the U.S.?
" \, Q+ V0 ~: N2 G2 D  JOHN: Yes, the recent agreements between the two governments have changed everything.
$ I8 i# b% n. m4 z  Now we have the right to sell in America at a much lower tariff.! r9 ~0 R0 c/ a
  It's going to be good. We can compete more directly with them.. \9 j# P- \! \
  CAROL: Great.. ^; ?. I0 |: x3 [2 j  v
  JOHN: Our computers have a high level of quality now.
9 M* ~. h. P4 h& h& f. D  We can demonstrate it. And our prices will be good.
) _% ^* R5 n. t! q  v. H1 o$ r0 ]6 x  So I think it will really be worthwhile.+ z7 ~% N9 _3 U# G: k3 S1 P  H
  CAROL: You seem excited about it.
6 {7 c1 K6 r7 I$ b/ n# ]/ H  JOHN: Well, you know I studied marketing in America.5 x) U* }' B6 d. U6 R7 w  H
  So maybe the thought of going back there to promote our brand is kind of exciting to me.
8 n8 ]1 r( S( U" N; G  I'd love to be part of the team.2 x$ W" `- w5 M0 Y: ]* D- U3 `  o
  CAROL: Do you honestly think we can compete though? All the computer giants are there.5 o7 O+ t# t0 y# s' Z
  JOHN: Yes, I do. I think we can compete. I think we can make a name for ourselves.
9 y3 u$ V' W( ?' O  l  It will be hard at first. But if we develop a good advertising campaign,

) x/ c/ S+ v8 o  CAROL: The company will have to choose a good advertising firm.
1 {9 {7 Z8 P1 R  And then there's the problem of quality., C1 L) g% @, d# [, W
  How do we convince American buyers that our quality is good?
8 h6 B; F5 N& P, y* h2 Z  JOHN: It takes some time.
0 L! I. N7 A$ f" p" p1 [! f) I# t/ E0 F  Because even if the quality is high,4 A( l% _% [* [) t
  people won't accept a high tech product unless they recognize the name.# I" S; v; \  H! Y
  Name recognition is crucial.
* l6 w8 E# A8 _7 u  u, M9 m6 P! C  CAROL: Well, I hope it all works out, John.
, a* E% u% n4 T/ a/ R  I think if you're part of the team, things will go well.: c; ]5 Z) d% I9 U- ~$ p+ `
  But you know we'd all miss you here. So I won’t say I'm happy to think that you’re leaving.5 v' d4 |' K+ s. B9 L' M  _8 _- L
  JOHN: That's very nice of you to say.$ L' x5 e' X# s1 d  Y
  But if we set up an office there in the States, maybe you could try to become part of it., R; D% I. O. b2 @4 ?
  CAROL: Me? No way.
' S: E% h5 D3 U; u  I'm dedicated to the company, but I’m not going to leave Taiwan. I'm happy here.
