  M: Yeah, I saw that. Crossing the streets in New York and Washington is dangerous. But getting ticked off about it won't do you any good.
Ticked off?/ t' G' S& [. {/ e0 P
  M: Yes, Ticked off means to get angry or annoyed at something. Getting angry at the drivers will not do you any good.8 W7 y7 f' r& H3 s/ i/ a# q
+ h6 D& s' ], R. b7 `: Q+ C  M: Yeah, like when your boyfriend broke up with you right before we started classes.7 k4 P, D, Z3 o1 n- P4 h' J
q. `: s1 Y7 h
  M: Well, I got pretty ticked off a few days ago when the professor gave me a low score on the exam.
# o. _3 g' r+ Y, S+ V7 U# H& Y  L:对,和你同班的中国同学王光告诉我你那天非常生气,因为那个教授给你的考试判分判得很低。Ticked off这个说法很好,以前我就知道用angry这个字。& |' P7 R3 i/ x' l" {
  M: Hey, are you hungry? We haven't eaten in a while.
. U  O5 P2 I4 Q3 r9 i$ Q8 Q: ]  (Michael和李华吃完饭以后)
" i0 p. U' m2 Q$ P  M: Now that we have eaten, let's walk to the White House. It's not too far from here.6 W/ R$ m4 L: m
V7 h; H9 L* r7 Q! _/ T
  M: Watch out Li Hua! Get back!
* F/ s, w" T; [# U3 c  L:哟!
% q6 `+ P' J: z) U% O1 [- X% C  M: Oh, my god! Are you okay? Geez, that was really a close call.
0 h0 O& v5 ?% S$ g( m+ E" O3 U  M: No, that's not what I meant by close call. I meant that the car nearly hit you.3 P- ~: e) u: J1 a; d9 F5 e' F# c3 I, g
$ S9 k7 v! w4 e! r$ i  M: Actually, Li Hua, close call means that you narrowly avoided danger. Something bad could have happened to you, but you narrowly avoided a bad situation.9 c4 n7 _! k, \
  M: Yeah, that's right.; X6 K+ f. [. c: w& j. W
! W& ]% h( t1 F# r! k0 s M: Not really. Let me give you another example. The paper you and I turned in this week was almost late. That was also a close call.
& m* }! * X. ]2 h( u% ~- M7 |& [
  M: Here we are! The White House!
