M: Yeah, I saw that. Crossing the streets in New York and Washington is dangerous. But getting ticked off about it won't do you any good.& ~! U8 l/ X+ t" B5 d* b
Ticked off?$ F' J6 O  q& w  w/ r, {5 i
M: Yes, Ticked off means to get angry or annoyed at something. Getting angry at the drivers will not do you any good.  d4 \! G! T$ Y/ Z
3 f. `) a$ K# i) S M: Yeah, like when your boyfriend broke up with you right before we started classes.% G$ M" i5 }1 i' R) q9 X3 x
! a2 A# b, C4 x3 q( A$ c& c M: Well, I got pretty ticked off a few days ago when the professor gave me a low score on the exam./ ^) _2 @8 f- ^8 A  k
0 Z' ~) D1 {  }7 r, n+ A) u
M: Hey, are you hungry? We haven't eaten in a while.
0 [) A9 D2 F4 k: o9 S  L:刚才好生气,连肚子饿也忘了。走,去吃点东西吧!8 T# J2 m  V3 J; U( }
X8 r. F0 U' j, _
M: Now that we have eaten, let's walk to the White House. It's not too far from here.
1 B+ q! k; K& {9 B/ M$ E- ? 太好了,除了照片外,我还没有看到过真的白宫呢!- k5 p5 I& C2 A$ R. q( c+ u, X
  M: Watch out Li Hua! Get back!$ V! E7 v" k) @  K+ j8 o
M: Oh, my god! Are you okay? Geez, that was really a close call.
. O4 n) T5 o: D$ l' | M: No, that's not what I meant by close call. I meant that the car nearly hit you.- ?: l( }/ }' _. t3 P% s
M: Actually, Li Hua, close call means that you narrowly avoided danger. Something bad could have happened to you, but you narrowly avoided a bad situation.
7 `: N3 o( P2 z! w!
0 @$ L  u5 C- G2 B0 s" ?) A M: Yeah, that's right.% {, t" c; j3 [) K4 ]0 K% F0 x
  L:那close call是不是一定用在跟生命危险有关的场合呢?$ d+ P. b5 B+ A; z% q+ G4 y8 C: R( K* G
M: Not really. Let me give you another example. The paper you and I turned in this week was almost late. That was also a close call.0 k4 r9 @) ?5 N9 q0 p. M
8 o+ Q1 v$ S/ Z9 i& z
  M: Here we are! The White House!+ \* m9 S0 y) `0 L4 E! M  L
