8 X' x2 d7 F  T9 [9 z2 \ M: Yeah, I saw that. Crossing the streets in New York and Washington is dangerous. But getting ticked off about it won't do you any good.
) ?! {3 c. Ticked off?
2 s+ u& L/ G! }6 X/ g  M: Yes, Ticked off means to get angry or annoyed at something. Getting angry at the drivers will not do you any good.$ g9 L8 o" q5 i5 }
5 I3 U7 E4 t, V- w
  M: Yeah, like when your boyfriend broke up with you right before we started classes.2 m7 A7 i; \8 O) a
8 r, O0 z' t/ ^  J M: Well, I got pretty ticked off a few days ago when the professor gave me a low score on the exam.
[% V1 R  A. D& T& j1 H  e2 i; |
  M: Hey, are you hungry? We haven't eaten in a while.
  (Michael和李华吃完饭以后)9 x* m5 ~6 \3 F8 ?9 e) q" Z& w1 D1 o
  M: Now that we have eaten, let's walk to the White House. It's not too far from here.7 _3 B8 z' y/ y( {# c1 c, P* R! ^4 f
+ N8 j5 I1 J$ ]; s0 P8 o; z$ A  M: Watch out Li Hua! Get back!  I& Y7 E- [2 Z4 z" Q2 J
% v- n) H- Y, Y( Z  M: Oh, my god! Are you okay? Geez, that was really a close call.6 a/ g! z' |: Z
: y  D- J7 R" r( T& X2 k( I  M: No, that's not what I meant by close call. I meant that the car nearly hit you.4 f3 C0 e# _* k: P( X1 m
8 z* K0 n4 o3 Y5 L: w M: Actually, Li Hua, close call means that you narrowly avoided danger. Something bad could have happened to you, but you narrowly avoided a bad situation.
' }# q: n& i! E3 h: r5 u; ?  L:原来close call就是说,差一点发生倒霉的事,我算是逃避了这倒霉事。我可以说,今天我差一点没被汽车撞了。对不对?9 O" e  }7 p$ }
  M: Yeah, that's right.. e- B% p; _4 w: _" D. e6 \
  M: Not really. Let me give you another example. The paper you and I turned in this week was almost late. That was also a close call.
* ?$ H, m/ d) `( |# {9 M  M: Here we are! The White House!
2 g1 \8 @/ ]!
