in an intensified form, and so on indefinitely. A man may take drink __4__3 P/ h3 D' n! y5 A
because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the most __5__
- e5 ?% x0 p8 g G! s completely because he drinks. It is rather the same thing that is
. V, Y; J2 Z! G happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate" {1 g6 ^: p( w% f' h. l& ~
because our thoughts are foolish, but the sloven of our language __6__9 ]& ?6 D" H6 Q
makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. The point is that the
5 W+ C- Y* q4 o; v( r( J process is irreversible. Modern English, especially written English, __7__4 i, a7 ?, s. d
is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and which can be
+ U( n& e& C7 \3 J% t avoided if one is willing to take the necessary trouble. If one gets3 g$ @( J/ S/ g
rid of these habits one can think more clearly, and think clearly is a __8__& |6 k) }) q. T+ b/ V' i( [9 s
necessary first step towards political regeneration: so that the fight+ B& |7 j% N; H3 \" }7 X. z0 o+ r
against bad English is not frivolous and is not the exclusive concerning __9__4 P4 j0 [' P% X/ h8 l
