Scientists used Hubble data to create an image of the planet being swallowed.
0 [. n6 y) q! ^- N6 b! j4 f, k  The Hubble Space Telescope has captured evidence of a Sun-like star "eating" a nearby planet.
  t9 q6 [. k4 ~  W
" T& L, {  S" ~, r7 i Astronomers knew that stars were capable of swallowing planets in orbit around them, but this is the first time the event has been "seen" so clearly.
  F+ p. k" w% S8 c% H+ M
1 T% X- w2 V- }' Y3 n Although the planet was too far away for Hubble to photograph, scientists have created an image of it, based on analysis of the telescope's data.* C' D' L; `# w- I
  X. c; @' [" d3 a  _# E) H5 M
  The discovery was published in the The Astrophysical Journal Letters.* z/ `7 |4 P4 T

1 F+ G$ N. H$ w: B The researchers say the planet, which is called Wasp-12b, may only have another 10 million years left before it is completely devoured.
$ S, c0 [+ T+ X. r
. @8 s) Z) S0 i1 E4 A It is so close to its star that it completes an orbit in 1.1 Earth days and is superheated to more than 1,500C.

( y* t% d& C, b3 A6 y( l& {7 j  Because of this proximity, the planet's atmosphere has ballooned to nearly three times the radius of Jupiter and is spilling material on to the star.& q6 t: ?# O4 q9 b$ r) N: _) K

- D) o4 n8 F0 O* p# p1 [ Carole Haswell from the UK's Open University led the research team. She explained: "We see a huge cloud of material around the planet which is escaping and will be captured by the star."
: N( ^/ j4 s' X: _8 l8 V 7 b$ N% y' a" x, d/ a
  Hubble's detection of the cloud enabled scientists to draw conclusions about how it was generated.

  Wasp-12 is a dwarf star located approximately 600 light-years away in the constellation Auriga.& X$ z' a( ~& {0 h0 u

  The exoplanet was first discovered by the UK's Wide Area Search for Planets (Wasp) in 2008.
