27.        I agree that job satisfaction is an important factor in determining whether a
# s5 l# f4 J( s5 e. X) Mcompany will be successful in the long term. However, other factors typically play just
; E. x$ j  n+ A- V/ `  `6 t/ r% ?as vital a role in the ultimate success or failure of a business. At the same time, job & s: s6 W" n0 T5 b' n
security is becoming decidedly unimportant for many employees and, in any event, ( g0 c# ]- [# k9 B; y6 |9 a
often leads to substandard job performance.
6 V0 W4 \: f( y6 Y. n, Y& @8 v      I agree that business success is more likely when employees feel satisfied with
6 ^5 T3 h( K( k  htheir lobs. Employees who dislike the workplace or their jobs are not likely to reach
2 G& t# q1 i( b( Ctheir potential performance levels; they may tend to arrive late for work, perform their + s" g6 q" S3 v) {+ m
tasks in an unimaginative and sluggish manner, or take excessive sick leaves. $ e9 @$ z; @& \. |3 e
Nevertheless, a firm's long-term success may equally result from other factors such as
* o# N6 M2 u) W3 Z/ g" M0 Rfinding a market niche for products, securing a reputation for quality products and 9 A7 }1 g$ X5 c: u; j1 X* d% P$ O
services, or forming a synergistic alliance with a competitor. This list hardly exhausts all
; i% T5 n1 s0 L1 {6 K( x. G; e* tthe factors that can contribute to a firm's ultimate success, and no one of them—
' I9 y- g3 y2 ?1 @. j% sincluding job satisfaction—is pivotal in every case.
) P; D9 W3 I  |, t% D+ W% f' ?      While job satisfaction clearly boosts employee morale and contributes to the 7 \  y( E# `! w. y6 \! s
overall success of a company, the same cannot be said for job security. Admittedly an
$ }; l8 V4 ?: a$ S6 U3 F- _# kemployee worried about how secure his or her job is might be less creative or ; f  m/ B+ H, w
productive as a result. By the same token, however, too much confidence in the security
" N% B8 G, h* ~5 d1 t, }8 P9 u' J  Aof one's job can foster complacency, which, in turn, may diminish employees' creativity
# d' u/ z# I2 C# J7 @7 G# e6 Eand productivity. Moreover, many employees actually place job security relatively low ( J, S9 B2 ?9 ~$ |8 B$ F. }
on the list of what they want in a job. In fact, more and more workers today are + Z" k& B: v8 w& ~( n
positively uninterested in long-term job security; instead, they are joining firms for the . m3 ~5 \+ e4 L# {3 n* X
sole purpose of accomplishing near-term professional goals, then leaving to face the
7 y! G" [' Y% s# _1 f: d. Onext challenge.( p) ^1 G, @! a4 \& M* s) D
      To sum up, the claim at issue overrates the importance of job satisfaction and
* X9 n$ o8 g# u8 D5 Hsecurity by identifying them as the key factors in a company's long-term success. Job ! m1 y. s8 h+ V- }3 _/ d
satisfaction among employees is very important, but it is not clearly more important
' L" U8 Z' `. l) c3 e, }than many other factors. At the same time, job security is clearly less important, and
2 Z, d: ^  n( q8 S1 [even unimportant in some cases.
