80.        In this editorial, the author argues that it makes financial sense for employers to : E: H6 d! ~' t! g8 X; d! y; e4 X
make the workplace safer, in support of this claim the author reasons that since wages " P+ n8 q- X+ e' Y' t
paid to employees should increase as the risk of physical injury increases, the converse 8 j% n9 s1 i/ D/ t' D( ]5 Z
should be true as well. Hence, by decreasing the risk of injury, employers could 6 Y* o; H0 \9 V9 `' h& E; ?" y
decrease the wages paid to workers and thereby save money. This argument is
/ s$ P/ N0 C6 u' c7 e/ M3 bunconvincing for two reasons.- d9 e2 U+ @3 m
      To begin with the author assumes that because companies would agree that as risk 3 r. I& U/ c- V2 \
of injury increases wages should also increase, they would also agree that as risk - }( h4 q5 n7 c# s: O! R, K
decreases wages should also decrease accordingly. This is tantamount to the assumption " K# v6 l, O7 |/ |7 T5 e' B
that risk of injury is the primary factor that determines workers' wages. It is obvious
. s$ K8 _! F4 b4 |that few employers, and even fewer employees, would agree that this is the case. To
' T5 V; Z& C6 o& Z7 cadopt this position one would have to disregard education, experience, and skill as & x3 \: c% c) f$ _- G% B
equally important factors in determining the wages paid to workers.
- o4 K  a6 O1 x+ O/ h: d8 n$ c      Secondly, the author's reasoning suggests that the only benefit of a safer 2 k" [  {" g3 s
workplace is the savings employers could realize from lower wages. This is obviously / @6 a1 E6 l2 X3 w$ G, X0 q
not true. The costs associated with accidents on the job could far outweigh any savings 2 p/ t6 l; T& b( r+ x; @7 W
that could be realized by paying workers lower wages.
" K! ~  G' L7 H2 G" Q      In conclusion, the author's argument is unconvincing. Risk of injury is an
2 s% \3 ^: v4 h1 _important factor to consider in determining the wages paid to workers but is not the only
0 o8 t; [/ d: R; a0 wsuch factor. Furthermore, there are far better reasons for employers to make the
7 l2 s# Z- D4 x) n5 y/ l8 J8 K$ |" sworkplace safe' than the one presented by the author.
