1. History of the Hebrews : (新约中)希伯来书

n The Hebrews (ancestors of the Jews):
: U) M6 C. x4 x2 r0 Y n Descendants of wandering tribes of Semites in the Near East, hence, called Hebrews,” which means “wanderers;”& ?8 |& U8 |; F/ k* f0 L- H
n After much wandering, the Hebrews under Abraham, settled in lower Canaan;
3 |" F0 r" J: G3 U0 e$ F n With the rough and dry climate Palestine proved to be unfit for living ;- }' m H3 V2 F+ B! b

II. Exodus【圣】《出埃及记》, A4 S4 v8 I! T4 k0 y
n In about 1750 B.C. Egypt was invaded by the Hyksos, also Semites. Hebrews enjoyed some prosperity in Egypt.7 ` H: a8 }' w @- w3 g0 m1 U
n The Hyksos were expelled from Egypt, the Hebrews had to pay the price of their kinship:" {9 s( |" |. B: E% M& c+ y( D1 e
n They were enslaved
" V5 |5 a" O$ l; z8 h1 z3 N n In about 1250 B.C. Moses, a new religious leader, determined to lead his people back to Cannan for a better life. This movement back towards Canaan is called the Exodus
% N# g$ q6 t; N9 a% e n Significance: creating the feeling of national unity for the first time.7 Z# w* r$ n# w! Z1 V/ _8 O
III. The Torah★ ★ ★(律法, 圣经旧约之首五卷)
9 p- Z$ l6 ^* k n Moses’ formulation of laws and establishment of religious principles :

$ }4 S& F+ T8 O# R: a9 Y8 Q- n" _ n → dictated to him by God to the people in the Sinai desert
% Y. \* u( c3 K* j n Over the centuries the Hebrews developed a whole moral and practical code of living: the Torah
9 X. E5 h0 [8 ` n → The basis of this is found in Pentateuch (the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy)7 D9 R/ X) ` u: {0 m6 A$ @. R; f
n Moses, however, died before the Hebrews actually reached Canaan.3 \9 L+ E3 {% j1 }
VI. The Kings《列王纪》
8 ^' r; [0 W3 |* t5 g1 i$ X n The Hebrew settlers ran into trouble with the other peoples who had been living in Canaan, esp. the Philistines
2 {3 @5 i: ?6 _2 @( Q$ \ n Samson led the Hebrews to score victory against the Philistines
6 `; } x: F1 W8 r w, @/ M n After Samson's death Saul set up the first royal dynasty of the Hebrews
7 ` E5 C7 X% j, `0 F n Saul was succeeded by his son-in-law David in about 1010 B.C.7 ~( S1 y7 ?9 z3 P/ G% N; t3 q
n David was succeeded by his son Solomon in 970 B.C.

& Y: t) o- H6 _) t( d3 u n After Solomon's death the kingdom was divided into two unequal and independent parts - Israel with Samaria as the capital, and Judah(犹大), retaining Jerusalem
7 N6 U9 {6 [: U& K7 y" T8 B n In 721 B.C. Israel was conquered by king of Assyria(亚述)% }8 p" K; ~- E* f5 ]) Z3 G8 L

n In 586 B.C. Judah was conquered by the Babylonian king, and lots of Jews were brought to Babylon as captives. This is the famous ”Babylonian captivity”4 x, X2 I3 U3 O. u, ~1 K Q
n It was not until Cyrus the Great of Persia波斯(西南亚国家,现在的伊朗)conquered Babylon in 539 B.C. did the Jews regained some powers → self governance for five hundred years& y5 Q: I5 }/ [* O& U4 A3 l. m
P.S.: Persia波斯:西南亚一个强大的帝国,公元前 546年后由居鲁士二世建立。到了大流士一世和他儿子色雷斯时期,帝国达到全盛时期 。 公元前 334年亚历山大大帝征服了波斯 。后来的帝国由萨桑王朝建立( 公元 226-637年)

# }( [4 s2 v. T5 L i% G9 b Y, E n In 70 B.C. the Roman emperor Titus took Jerusalem. Following this the Jewish people dispersed and left their land to make a living as best they could in different countries throughout the world.

, X( L* S! Q0 c Judaism and Christianity are closely related: Q# s/ U `3 X& C
I. Christianity emerged from Judaism, hence there are many concepts and values held in common by Judaism and Christianity (the body of these concepts and values is also called Judeo-Christian tradition ):8 b$ G0 `" {& o" v9 t3 ^
Judeo-Christian tradition
1 Y% X0 f5 ^: L1 n+ N9 d n i. Monotheism(一神论): Both religions reject atheism, on the one hand, and polytheism, on the other

n iii. Form of worship: including a priesthood(教士, 僧侣, 神父) concepts of sacred space and sacred time, the idea that worship here on Earth is patterned after worship in Heaven, and the use of the Psalms(圣歌)in community prayer.& `9 i! O" c4 A" i4 ^( R8 M
n II. Both originated in Palestine, which led to exchange of ideas over wide areas. |
