  During the roaring twenties Americans found themselves in a struggle between the old ways of their ancestors and the new ways of the future.# ?& ~) X# e* v; j

* G' a) `) \, e" {7 W7 p  The once steadfast beliefs that men and women should not touch while dancing, and that ladies should not drink or smoke were suddenly being challenged.

+ z0 R! G9 C0 `7 n/ O( A+ Y6 k  Nonetheless, returning soldiers could not be held responsible for the social upheaval that America experienced.& U/ E) w( f3 {, C/ i3 l. h3 V; r# A

+ h2 g, C1 h) G, p/ I6 H; W  There had to be another cause, and there was, the media.$ s) V+ r+ z1 }( N( E  v9 K

  Although the films of the era were silent they spoke volumes to the society for which they were created.7 b4 l+ G; b, S# F/ X& G

  Women in these movies wore their hemlines a few inches shorter than the decade before them and they wore cosmetics to accentuate their new bobbed haircuts.

  The movies, as well as the books of that era, demonstrated a new materialistic attitude that America had never before experienced.
% m9 \% z2 S2 W0 c# @' u9 I, f
4 D3 d7 q0 z* L, _0 C  Films portrayed every character as having the money to buy a new car, drink, smoke and partake in the leisures of life, a philosophy that was soon adopted by the youth of the decade.1 [  d" L) Y8 l/ z& E4 F8 {6 t

  q* q( ?; V( s) @+ C  The use of the media in the twenties was to serve as a catalyst for the revolutionary ideas that were circulating.0 Q5 R& g& |, P4 v
4 t4 d/ x7 u/ ^; s2 p
  The films and books of that era sped America along its path of change that eventually led to the greatest social unrest that the United States had ever known.8 T4 }- k* W2 [/ x

8 d4 ^$ V- ^: X6 u+ S  Unlike the twenties, the sixties and seventies utalized the media in a way that appealed to those searching for truth in a lost and confused world.
