Technological innovation was spurred by the general advance inthe social organization of knowledge. In the Middle Ages, efforts atscientific creativity were few and relatively and isolated for oneanother, mainly because there were no effective arrangements for thepreservation and dissemination of knowledge. Since there was noorganized protection for patent rights, scientists and inventors werevery secretive about their activities and operations. The establishmentof scientific associations and the publication of scientific journalsspurred the exchange of knowledge among scientists and created awritten record that could be examined by posterity.
